Cubic Metre Calculator

Simplify your logistics process and bridge the gap between cubic metres and pallet-ready measurements.

Turn m3 into L x W x H

In freight logistics, most companies work with pallet dimensions—length × width × height—when planning loads and truck capacities. However, importers often deal in cubic metres, as containers are measured and filled using this standard. This can make it challenging to translate cubic metre measurements into the more practical pallet dimensions required by freight providers.

For example, when quoting for port pickups, freight forwarders might only have a total cubic metre value, while carriers need specific dimensions to plan loading effectively. That’s where our cubic metre calculator comes in—to convert cubic metre values into length, width, and height dimensions, making it easier to reconcile container data with practical freight requirements.

Instructions

  1. Enter the Volume: Punch in the cubic metre (m³) value into the "Enter Volume" box.

  2. Hit Calculate: Tap the "Calculate" button to see it broken down into Length, Width, and Height.

  3. Check the Results: The sizes (in metres) will pop up underneath, showing you the Length, Width, and Height.

This makes it easy to see if the load will fit in your truck!

About our company

From Record-Setting Racer to The INH Transport

Mark’s path to founding INH Transport started under the hood as a diesel mechanic, fixing some of Australia’s biggest rigs. One stormy day along the Great Ocean Road, he was called out to repair a semi-truck so large it seemed immovable. Lying soaked beneath its massive wheels, he heard the driver say, “Glad I don’t have your job.” In that moment, Mark realised he was ready for a different challenge—one that would put him in control of the journey, not just the repairs.

But Mark brought more than mechanical know-how to INH Transport. His racing history at Sydney Motorsport Park, where he set record lap times, sharpened his sense of speed and precision. With his top 10 global Tetris ranking—proof of his unmatched loading skills—Mark created a business built on efficiency and care. Today, INH Transport is a leading Sydney company, trusted to handle everything from fragile stage gear to heavy machinery, always delivering on time and with precision.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Freight companies use cubic metres (CBM) to calculate shipping costs because space, not just weight, is often the limiting factor for trucks, containers, or aircraft. For instance, a truck might reach its volume capacity before hitting its weight limit, especially when transporting light but bulky items like furniture or foam products. CBM ensures equitable pricing based on the space your shipment occupies, allowing freight companies to manage capacity effectively.

At INH Transport, we simplify this process with an easy-to-use cubic metre calculator, ensuring transparency and accuracy for our clients.

  • To calculate cubic metres, multiply the length, width, and height of your shipment in metres (L × W × H). For example, a package measuring 1.2m × 0.8m × 0.5m equals 0.48 CBM. Be sure to include packaging materials in your measurements to avoid surprises.

  • If none of the dimensions (length, width, or height) are provided, you can estimate average dimensions using a few logical approaches:

    1. Assume Even Distribution
If no specific dimensions are known, you can assume that the length, width, and height are roughly equal. For example, if your shipment is 2 CBM, you can calculate the cube root of the total volume to estimate that each dimension is around 1.26 metres. This method provides a rough estimate but is often sufficient for early planning.

    2. Use Standard Pallet or Package Sizes
In many cases, shipments are packed onto standard pallets or crates. For example, if your shipment is likely on an Australian pallet (typically 1.2 metres by 1.2 metres), you can divide the total CBM by the base area of the pallet to estimate the height. This assumes the goods are evenly distributed over the pallet base, which is a common practice in freight.

  • Reconciling CBM with actual dimensions can uncover discrepancies that lead to logistical challenges or additional costs. For example, importers might provide CBM data based on rough estimates, omitting the extra space taken up by packaging or irregular-shaped goods. If these measurements aren’t verified, freight companies may face issues during loading, such as a shipment not fitting into the allocated space or exceeding vehicle height limits. This can result in costly delays, reallocation of shipments, or unexpected surcharges.

  • Yes, pallets typically have standardised dimensions, like the Australian pallet (1.2m × 1.2m) or the Euro pallet (1.2m × 0.8m). Using standard pallets not only optimises space but also simplifies cubic metre calculations. Non-standard sizes may result in wasted space or higher costs due to inefficiencies.
